Summer Reading 2019

To Park High School Honors English students and their parents/guardians:

In order to help students remain intellectually challenged, to avoid falling prey to summer slide, and to simply enjoy a good book, the English Department is requiring all incoming Honors English students to complete a summer reading assignment; this will consist of reading and analyzing one novel. Common assessments and activities on this text will be completed at the start of the school year.

Honors English 9 students will be required to read the novel Tears of a Tiger by Sharon Draper.
-Honors English 9 Summer Reading Letter and Assignment

Honors English 10 students will be required to read the novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury.
-Honors English 10 Summer Reading Parent Letter
-Honors English 10 Summer Reading Assignment

IB English HL Year 1 (grade 11) students will be required to read the novel Beartown by Fredrik Backman.
-IB English HL Year 1 (grade 11) Summer Reading Assignment
IB English HL Year 2 (grade 12) students will be required to read the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
-IB English HL Year 2 (grade 12) Summer Reading Assignment

Our goal is to have students step into the classroom in the fall ready to learn and to pick up from where we left off in the spring, as well as to help students prepare for the kind of reading and analysis needed to be successful in high school and beyond.

Students can check out the book and pick up an initial assignment in their current school library before the end of the school year. Another option is to purchase the book in order to annotate the text.

*** If the summer requirements do not match your capabilities or work ethic, please contact your high school counselor to make appropriate schedule modifications. ***

Have a wonderful summer; we look forward to working with you in the fall.

Regards,
Park High School English Staff
